Who We Serve
Safe space is the only queer community center in an approximate 100 mile radius, encompassing PA, WV, VA and MD. We aim to be a far reaching Nexus for the queer communities of this region while simultaneously having a specific focus on the Queer community of Allegany County, MD. Our goal is to facilitate community and services to people of all ages (including children and families).
Safe Space Cumberland is the legacy of our Director Kijana West. Kijana was born and raised in NYC. She has deep family roots in Allegany county and spent childhood summers in Frostburg. Kijana has been deeply involved in queer social work in NYC for over 20 years. Upon recently moving to the area, the need for a unifying force in the queer community became glaringly obvious. Hence Safe Space Cumberland was born. Safe Space Cumberland is named after a queer social work agency in NYC that Kijana spent 7 years as a social worker until they closed in 2003.
